Apply to clean, dry nails. Cleanse the nails with a small amount of nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol to remove any traces of oil or emollients from hand creams. Any trace of oil or moisture on the nails will prevent the polish from adhering to it. Apply one layer of Paula's Select Longevity Base & Top Coat and allow a few moments to dry. This base coat acts as a "foundation" for your manicure. Next, apply your nail polish color of choice. Begin approximately 1/8 inch away from the cuticle, and brush forward, in one continuous stroke, toward the tip of the nail. Use the tip of the brush to push the nail polish backward toward the cuticle, stopping just before the skin begins. Next, paint the color onto the sides of the nails, being careful to not get polish on the skin. Apply polish in thin (but not too thin) coats. Best results are obtained from applying at least three coats of polish, and allowing a few moments between coats for the subsequent layer to dry. Once polish is dry, finish the manicure by applying another layer of Longevity Base & Top Coat. This will seal the polish, aid in chip-resistance, and add a long-lasting shine.
Do not attempt to dry your nails with a heat source (such as a blow dryer or UV heat lamp). This will only cause the polish to expand and lift away from the nail.
To make your manicure go the distance and look good between manicures, apply a thin layer of Longevity Base & Top Coat daily.
Wear protective gloves whenever doing work involving water or dirt (doing the dishes, gardening).
Do not use your nails as tools! Instead, use the pads of your fingertips, especially for typing. Keep tools (such as pliers, scissors, even paperclips) handy so you are not tempted to loosen, remove, or pry things open with your nails.
Do not store nail polish in the refrigerator. The cold and resulting condensation will only cause the polish to thicken, which will result in an uneven application.
Even after following all of the tips and application techniques above, it is unrealistic to expect your manicure to last for more than 3-4 days before you will need to redo one or more nails. This is true regardless of the nail polish or base/top coat you choose.
